Claes Bergquist has for several years been interested in the cultural heritage of our ancestor, with special emphasis on the ancient rock-carvings, both as works of art and as magic symbols. Being extremely thorough in his carving the intriguing Bronze Age motifs in granite, he is a steward of the cultural heritage. He thus allows modern man the opportunity to interpret the art for himself. The magic motifs are exquisitely carved in carefully chosen granite stones, hand picked on the shores of Sweden, constituting the very same material used for the original rock carvings. The work is time-consuming; it takes great patience, meticulous handicraft and a trained eye to match the most fitting motif to each specific stone. This technique renders each stone a singular identity, no two stones are alike. As his ancestors, Claes Bergquist has developed a rare ability to work the really rock- hard granite. By carving magic motifs on stones, he is today one of very few that carry the ancient rock-carving tradition on. This gives the beholder the possibility to enjoy the carvings at his or her own pace and place, futher to inspire personal interpretations of the myths and magic of Bronze Age man. Since the above was written, Claes Bergquist has stridden into the world of the Vikings; In 2018 he also began painting "collage" on old paintings from flea markets but gradually started painting on new canvas. . |
